The char
Flame draws a textured, cracked skin across each board, the mark of true shou sugi ban. Brushed or weathered edges break to a soft silvery-grey against the charcoal-black.
Indoors and out
Charred spruce and pine carries from interior walls and ceilings to outdoor facades and sauna rooms. The same board reads at home on a forest summer house, a pub interior, or a spa sauna.

Installation
Yakisugi boards are fixed to timber battens over a ventilated cavity, the way solid cladding has always been hung. Set a level datum, allow for movement, and treat the trimmed ends where the char stops and raw timber begins.

A few practical notes on how these charred boards are sold, fixed and lived with.
Talk to a specialistYes. They suit indoor walls and ceilings, outdoor facades and cladding, and saunas, and the charring makes them naturally weather-resistant outside.
Boards are sold per lineal metre and supplied as full 6 metre boards, in a 120 mm wide, 28 mm thick square-edge profile. Retail is about $29 per lineal metre, so one 6 metre board is $174. You cut them to fit on site.
Each board is 120 mm wide, so a square metre of wall takes roughly 8.5 lineal metres of board before gaps and offcuts. Measure your area, then add a margin for trimming and end joints, or ask us for a hand with the quantity.
Each board is charred and cut to 6 metres for your order rather than held in stock, so there is a short lead time that we confirm with your quote. It also means a custom length is possible if your project needs one, so talk to a specialist for a made-to-order run.
These are solid timber, charred by hand, so expect natural variation in grain and char from board to board. Across a facade this reads as depth and character rather than a flat, uniform panel.
The square-edge boards are face-fixed to timber battens with stainless fixings over a ventilated cavity, the standard approach for solid-timber cladding on walls, ceilings and facades. They run vertically or horizontally.
Charring is the traditional yakisugi method of finishing the surface with flame, not a fire treatment. We do not state a fire rating or class for the boards, so check local requirements for your project with your builder or certifier.
The charred surface is low-maintenance and needs no added finish, so most installs are left as they arrive with only occasional cleaning. Trimmed ends should be brushed with a matched black finish to carry the colour through.
The char is bonded into the timber surface and settles further once fixed. A brushed or weathered face may lift a little fine soot early on and read more silvery-grey over time, which is part of the material's character.
Yes. The boards are suitable for saunas, including sauna interiors and freestanding sauna huts, alongside indoor and outdoor cladding.
